History of Gumla

Gumla used to be a small village. Earlier the place used to witness a Cow Fair every year which continued for one week. During this fair people used to sell off and exchange ornaments, cattle, utensils and grains. People could get hold of these items only at this fair, hence the locals used to make an extensive list of necessary items that they would need throughout the year and purchase them at this fair. A large number of people were attracted to Gumla to sell and buy the agricultural stuff. Slowly and steadily people began to populate Gumla and finally it turned into a village and thereafter it was entitled “Gumla” which would have probably been derived from the “Gau-Mela”.Once Naga Dynasty rulers used to govern the Chota Nagpur area. During that period Baraik Devenandan Singh had established his rule over the entire region of Gumla. During British Period, Gumla was part of Lohardaga. In the year 1843, the town of Gumla was made a part of the province of Bishnupur. In 1899, this province came into being was known by“Ranchi”. In the year 1902, the Gumla town turned into a subdivision of the district Ranchi. mIn 1984, on 18th may, the District Gumla came into life. At that time Shri Jagannath Mishra was Bihar’s Chief Minister who unveiled the district. Shri Dwarika Nath Sinha was selected as the 1st Deputy commissioner of Gumla District.

Geography and Climate of Gumla

Gumla is positioned at 23 degree North and 84.50 degree East. Gumla is geologically located in the southern portion of Chota Nagpur plateau, which makes eastern edge of the system of Deccan plateau. There are 3 main rivers which flow through Gumla- North Koyel, South Koyel and Shankh.
Gumla witnesses a sub-tropical climate throughout the year. Weather conditions remain moderate all through the year. In the summer months the maximum temperature shoots up to 40 degree Celsius and minimum temperature remains around 20 degree Celsius, whereas in the winter months the minimum temperature drops down to 3 degree Celsius and the maximum temperature is around 21 degree Celsius. The town experiences an annual rainfall of around 1450 mm.

According to the census of 2001, Gumla’s population was 104600. Males comprised 52 percent whereas females comprised 48 percent of the total populace. The avg. literacy rate of Gumla was 75 percent which is greater than the national avg. i.e. 59.5 percent. Female and male literacy were 70 percent and 80 percent respectively. 15 percent populace was below six years age. The main languages that are spoken in Gumla are Hindi, Kurukh, Nagpuri, Bihari and Oriya.

Culture in Gumla

Gumla gives shelter to numerous castes, creeds and religions. A number of festivals are rejoiced by the locals with great fervor, harmony and glory. Karma Festival is celebrated by the residents of Gumla. Sarhul is another popular festival of Gumla which is very popular among the Oraons. Sarhul festival is accompanied by the Sarhul dance. The dancers make a circle by forming a chain and then the dance is performed with songs and music. Traditional musical instruments are played during this dance and the musicians are encircled by the dancers. Women are dressed in red bordered white sari, while the men put on a red bordered white dhoti. Bheja dance is another famous dance of Gumla. This dance is performed by young girls and boys who make a chain by holding the hands of each other in alternate sequence. Thereafter, the dance is performed which follows various stances along with tuneful traditional songs and music in rhythm.

There is no railway station in Gumla. The nearest rail head to Gumla is the Ranchi Railway Station which is located at a distance of 90 kms from Gumla.
